How to plan for a perfect family camping trip
By Waithera Mbuthia
We all hope Covid-19 will go away, don’t we? And it shall. ‘We shall overcome’, we keep saying this as much as we keep the hope. So, when we finally overcome, what’s the plan? Camping sounds like a plan, no?
Planning for a camp can be hard work, especially if you are to go with the whole family. There are basics that you will need to look into as you plan for it. We’ll give you some ideas on how to plan for the near perfect camp:
Location
Campgrounds vary indifferent styles of camping for families but the campsite selection must be based on the need and preference of all members of your family, not only yours.Established campgrounds or national parks are ideal sites. Remote locations are interesting if you plan to spend the entire time in the camp. Established grounds have the advantage of amenities like running water and bathroom facilities. Though you might have to book in advance, it is worth the cost.
Tents
Well, what is camping without a tent? Pack your tent, which is probably bigger that all your luggage. But, you need it. Choose a tent that is durable, for multiple use. In established grounds, they might offer the tents at a fee, which is convenient since you will have less luggage.
Basic amenities
You will need to eat, drink and keep warm during camping. If you are going camping in remote areas where there are no basic amenities like water, you will need to pack your own. Cooler boxes come in handy at this time. The bigger the cooler box the better to reduce the number of luggage you have to carry along. You can carry your water and drinks in one, and food items in another. Depending on the number of days you will be camping, carry enough to last. Clothing will also come in handy. It is a good idea to carry clothes warm enough especially for the night. The tent is not as warm as your bedroom.
Packing
We keep insisting on the idea of having less luggage. To pack your camping essentials, it is easier if you have one large bag –we recommend a water proof one. The alternative of this is to line your bag with a garbage bag inside to make sure that items in the bag remain dry. Pack your items in order of priority. Ensure all the space in your bag is used up. Also, ensure like-items are grouped together for ease of setting up when you get to the camping site.
Here is a list of items you will need to pack:
i. Sleeping-bag and mat
ii. Knife
iii. Batteries
iv. Flashlight
v. Matches
vi. Extra clothes, with multiple pairs of socks
vii. Compass
viii. Cellphone, for communication.
